On the afternoon of 6th September 2009, the world will finally be rid of the 'Chop Shop/Martin Kemp' Gangster Car. It is to be crushed beyond recognition by the Santa Pod Monster Truck,'Podzilla'.
As long as we have had cars, people have modified cars. We have enjoyed the freedom to do so within sensible, safety conscious regulation. Some modified cars have sold for huge sums as works of art. Some hugely expensive custom vehicles, undertaken by professional builders, have been quite inspirational. Vehicles such at the Prowler, and even the PT Cruiser have been influenced by the Hot Rod roots of people like Tom Gale, and millions all over the world are aware of the work of Coddington, Foose, Shine, and Barry White. And then there is Chop Shop.
If ever there was a reason to scream for more regulation and legislation, it would have to be that people actually believed the modified vehicle enthusiast was represented by, or worse aspired to, the work held up for public admiration, by Chop Shop.
This fugly abomination is without doubt a better candidate to be destroyed by Podzilla than any number of tired production cars which have simply reached the end of their viable life. It is a threat to our future freedom to build cars which we love, be they VWs, Hot Rods, or Customs of any kind. We see the exercise of feeding it to Podzilla (after removing re-useable parts) as a kind of 'self regulation'. It has to die.
You don't have to agree with us, but if you do, then you can personally take part in its 'send off'. For a small donation to Brad's Cancer Foundation, you can write a goodbye message on the car, strike it several times with a blunt instrument, or even both... go on, fill your boots! (Safety equipment will be provided.)
Several "Smash and Graff" sessions will be held throughout the weekend, before the Gangster Car meets its nemesis, Podzilla.
